JOB SUMMARY:

Hours: Monday-Friday 12:00pm-8:30pm (with flexibility to accommodate for staffing needs.)
The Department Supervisor oversees daily operations and personnel within the 2nd Shift Accessioning department, ensuring efficient workflow, staff competency, and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include scheduling, workflow oversight, performance management, and staff training. This role requires advanced knowledge of LIS requirements and data management, strong leadership, proficiency with various computer systems, and effective communication skills to support operational and quality objectives.

The Supervisor collaborates with management to maintain efficient departmental operations and ensure adherence to company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements (CAP, CLIA, OSHA).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 
  • Manage and delegate daily workflow to ensure timely, high-quality output.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and competency evaluations.
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration within and across departments.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, management, pathologists, and clients.
  • Maintain department schedules, time, and attendance records.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and technical issues as needed.
  • Support training, mentoring, and staff development.
  • Assist with departmental projects and other assigned duties.

      DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS (2nd Shift Accessioning)
 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in LIS utilization and data entry requirements, including elements of reporting, data gathering, specimen tracking, and cross-departmental LIS support.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of LIS interfaces, including data transfer via HL7 messaging and direct interfaces to related information systems throughout the laboratory.
  • Demonstrate highly developed problem-solving skills, including cross-departmental and client communication.
  • Devote approximately 70% of time to hands-on departmental support and 30% to administrative functions.
  • Prepare reagents and solutions; ensure proper labeling and disposal.
  • Maintain and review QC documentation; assist in updating policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Oversee workflow, supply inventory, and equipment maintenance.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to staff.
  • Ensure adherence to proficiency testing and quality standards.
  • Communicate effectively with the Support Services Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking; occasional bending and lifting up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires near visual acuity and color differentiation.
  • Exposure to mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, patient specimens, and sharps.
  • Requires adherence to bloodborne pathogen and hazardous waste safety procedures.
  • Use of PPE (gloves, face shields, lab coats) as required.

  2. Cassette Printers
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
   Supervision of 2nd Shift Accessioning Personnel
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in biological or clinical laboratory science preferred.
  • Minimum three years of data entry experience in a patient care or pathology environment; prior lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered at the discretion of the department manager.
