JOB SUMMARY:
Full time hours: Monday-Friday 9am-5:30pm

Bone Marrow Scheduler / Assistants require expanded knowledge and understanding of laboratory techniques and the ability to perform technical tasks, as assigned, based on specific department needs. 

The primary duties involve in-office work, which includes interacting with oncology offices, patients, cardiologists, and others via telephone, email, and fax. Approximately 90% of the daily duties are clerical, with the remaining 10% involving assistance in collections at surgery centers.

Good reading, writing, and math abilities are required.  Must be able to demonstrate good problem-solving skills, highly developed interpersonal skills, and a high level of self-motivation. 

Employees are responsible for following all Company policies and procedures.  These policies and procedures will include adherence to regulatory standards such as CAP, CLIA and OSHA, including safety standards in performing all aspects of the functions below.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. All Lab Technician positions:
  • Have an advanced understanding of laboratory techniques with an emphasis on department specific techniques. 
  • Possess high-level oral and written communication and problem-solving skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, managers, clients, and pathologists.
  • Must be able to multi-task, accurately, and with a focus on quality.
  • Must be proficient in basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision, ability to self-direct.
  • Maintain department specific competency.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in other duties and projects as assigned by department manager.

DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC – BONE MARROW SCHEDULER / ASSISTANT
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and meet established and varied deadlines.
  • Display time management skills, with a focus on the task at hand. 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple schedules and staff simultaneously in a fast-paced changing environment. 
  • Follow daily task list, but once trained, able to self-direct knowing the daily priorities. 

Bone Marrow Scheduling (80% of position)  
  • Call patients and families, clinician offices, and cardiology offices to discuss basic medical histories.
  • Communicate with surgery centers and anesthesia groups regarding scheduled patients.
  • Email patients and families, clinician offices in a positive manner.
  • Fax requested paperwork to cardiology offices.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills including Excel, PDFs, etc.
  • Use scheduling software tools – Excel, Office, Outlook calendars, Casetabs, etc.

Bone Marrow Assisting (20% of position)
  • All duties are performed in an OR setting and require following surgery center rules and guidelines. 
  • Maintain a positive interaction with all surgery center staff members. 
  • Assist Nurse Practitioners with bone marrow collections.
  • Label specimens in accordance with laboratory procedures. 
  • Make peripheral blood smears.
  • Make bone marrow aspirate smears and bone marrow core touch preps. 
  • Maintain bone marrow cart supplies in all locations. 
 
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:
  1. In exercising these functions, the employee must be able to exert up to 40 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force routinely to move objects.
  2. In the OR setting, employees may be exposed to blood products, knife cuts, hazardous waste, and chemical fumes, so appropriate precautionary measures must always be followed.  Certain situations require eye protection, mask, scrubs, surgical attire, and/or gloves. Hazardous Waste training required.
  3. In the OR setting, Bone Marrow Assistants have direct patient contact.  Knowledge of safe practices is required. 
  4. Bone Marrow Assistants are required to provide current vaccine card and maintain CPR/BLS certification.  Certification and appropriate vaccines provided by company.    
  5. In the OR setting, the employee must be able to stand for long periods of time, routinely 3-4 hours at a time. 
  6. Reliable transportation is required to assist in the OR setting.  Mileage reimbursement provided by company at national rate.  Arrival at surgery centers requires provided Clin-Path clothing and changing into surgery center provided scrubs. 
  7. Must be able to perform repetitive motion.

None
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One year of relevant laboratory experience

Experience Levels:
I: Less than 3 years of relevant work experience.
II: 3-7 years of relevant work experience.
III: 8+ years of relevant work experience.

(All experience is determined at the discretion of the Department Manager)
